WSRE Receives Emmy® Nomination for Local Documentary
The Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has nominated WSRE's original documentary "Gulf Islands National Seashore: The Treasure of the Gulf Coast" for the coveted Emmy® Award in the documentary (topical) category.WSRE is the Gulf Coast region's local PBS television station covering southern Alabama to Okaloosa County in Florida. The awards will be announced Saturday, December 4 at an awards ceremony in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
"Gulf Islands National Seashore: The Treasure of the Gulf Coast" is a WSRE original documentary that premiered in Fall 2009. Narrated by Ken Burns and filmed in high definition with breathtaking, visually stunning footage, "Gulf Islands" showcases the beauty of the national seashore and tells the story of how it came to be preserved. This is the third award recognition for the WSRE original documentary. "Gulf Islands" also won a 2010 Bronze Telly Award in the original documentary category as well as the 2010 People's Telly Award for original documentary.
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and its 19 regional chapters are dedicated to the advancement of the arts and science of television and the promotion of creative leadership for artistic, educational and technical achievements within the television industry. The Emmy® Awards are bestowed for excellence in television in the categories of news, sports, daytime, public service, arts & entertainment, documentary and technology.

Gulf Islands National Seashore: The Treasure of the Gulf Coast
WSRE's production is narrated by none other than the famous documentarian himself — Ken Burns. The local documentary explores a national treasure found right in our own back yard — The Gulf Islands National Seashore.
Located in Florida and Mississippi, Gulf Islands National Seashore consists of 12 units and is the largest national park unit in the United States containing a seashore. Sparkling emerald waters; snow-white crystalline sand; barrier islands; salt marshes; forests of Live Oaks, pines and magnolias; historic structures; archeological sites; and a diverse array of wildlife — all of this can be found at the Gulf Islands National Seashore.
The documentary, filmed in high definition, features breathtaking, visually stunning footage that beckons you to experience these vivid landscapes with your own eyes. The program showcases the beauty and the history of the region, truly the treasure of the Gulf Coast. The program will be broadcast on other PBS stations in the coming months for viewers all over the southeast.
